Marketers - Ever Been to the Moon?

The moon has a very distinctive smell. Ask any Apollo moonwalker about the aroma of the lunar surface and you’ll get the same answer…

Wondering what it is? Well this week, marketers in Ireland were set a fascinating challenge; to let their smelling powers experience the moon's lunar surface. What channel, apart from direct mail, has the power to give your customers such unique experiences through all of their five senses?

Smell is a powerful sense to engage as a marketer, as it helps to connect consumers emotionally with brands. Our sense of smell can dramatically alter our mood. Test results have showed a 40% improvement in our mood when we are exposed to a pleasant fragrance – particularly if that fragrance taps into a pleasant memory. There are 100,000 odours in the world, 1,000 of them are considered primary odours. Each primary odour has the potential to alter mood and behaviour.

Find out more about the power of sensory marketing, and how to harness the incredibly powerful medium that is direct mail, at the upcoming Engage the Senses event, where you will learn how to create impactful and unforgettable campaigns of your own.

Marketers - How Does New Business Sound?

In today’s marketplace it can be hard for businesses to make themselves heard. And, if they want to influence purchase decision making, they must get noticed audibly. Sounds are really important for our emotional decisions. They add to the experience. We have approximately 25,000 receptors in our eardrums, each sending messages to different parts of our brain, including our subconscious where more than half of all consumer purchase decisions are made.

Direct mail offers you a unique way to make sure your message is received loud and clear by appealing to your customer’s five senses. For this week's Engage the Senses challenge, we sent marketers in Ireland a direct mail communication that asked them to whistle and their very own robot beeped back at them. Sometimes the robot reacted to high pitched sounds while he was still in the envelope, which prompted people to enquire if their colleague's phone was beeping or if an alarm had been set off. Upon searching, and holding the envelope up to their ear, they found it was our mailing. The surprise element meant they just had to open it, read it and talk about the experience. Job done. Direct mail cut through and delivered it's message. Again.

Discover how to use this incredibly versatile medium at our An Post Engage the Senses event, where you will learn how to develop intriguing campaigns that are sure to hit a chord with your target audience.
